Laurie Kampe was born in Arlington Heights, IL. After independent study of art and design as a youth, she went on to receive a Bachelor's degree in Art from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with an emphasis in design. During college she continued her studies through studio classes in drawing, printmaking and sculpture.

Laurie then pursued a career in design and started out as a book and magazine designer. She went on to consult as a web designer and information architect. The result of her design work is in the Smithsonian Institution's permanent collection, and she has received numerous other recognitions and awards.

In 2004 Laurie chose to dedicate herself fully to art and continued her studies at the Art Students League of Denver. She is currently building a body of large works in oil, exploring abstract spaces often with a figurative element. Laurie has found ongoing support through early collectors and gallery invitationals. She has found guidance through mentors and teachers who taught her to see.

Laurie lives outside of Denver, Colorado.

Artist Statement
My work is a reflection of what I am drawn to: simplicity and texture, urban energy and stillness. The work is born from a mixture of abstract concepts, sketches from life, pictures, places and imagination. A new situation is created for the viewer to interpret. My process includes creating charcoal studies and painting from those studies. This allows for deeper, more natural expression in the work. My hope is that the drawings and paintings are enjoyed.
